💡 Question: "Steve, a friend of mine just told me never to use credit cards because they are dangerous, and it's a way for the gov't to track you. Is this true, or am I just friends with a conspiracy theorist?"
I've seriously had it.
I've had it with stupid money advice. The problem is it's everywhere. On Twitter. Mainstream Media. So-called "personal finance experts".
Bad advice is so common that many of us out there believe it.
It drives me bananas whenever I hear it.
"Never use credit cards."
This advice is nuts. Like Jack Nickelson in "The Shining" nuts.
Jack Torrance (played by Jack Nickelson) in The Shining
Spending money on credit isn't bad.
Believe it or not, when we use credit cards responsibly, they help us save money with implied warranties, give us money through cashback programs and free travel perks like cheap or free hotel rooms, airfare and rental cars.
I just logged into one of our credit cards online. We have 295,000 points that we've built up just by spending money as we normally would. These points can be redeemed for lots of travel-related expenses—even Amazon purchases.
Heck, this card even warranties most of the electronics that we buy with it, making those extended warranties useless.
Using credit cards is insanely beneficial.
The key to making credit cards worth it? Using them responsibly.
After all, there is a reason why the total consumer debt in the United States is approaching $17.5 trillion. The fact is too many people use credit cards as a means to spend money they don't have.
That's irresponsible. The best ways to properly use credit cards:
pay off your balance every month (use automation to help)
never buy things without the cash to pay for them
resist spending extra money to earn more reward points
Use your credit card as you would cash.
Then, enjoy all that free money you earned just by being responsible.
Now, let's move on to what your friend said about making it easier for the government to track you.
I mean...I suppose it does, sure.
Using credit cards means there's a paper trail. And paper trails aren't good for people who don't want people (yes, even the government!) knowing what you're spending money on.
Is your friend right? I guess. Are they also paranoid? Most definitely.
If the government wants to know how much money I spend on books, dog food, fake potted plants, USB-C charging cables, gas, food, and whatever else, fine.
But I have news for you: The government doesn't care about you.
Do you think some government employee is sitting in their cube giggling at your credit card spending? The answer is no.
Nobody cares.
Unless you're doing something nefarious, I have no idea why anyone would be concerned about the government tracking your credit card expenses.
But hey, to each their own, right?

Is there any way I can reduce my tax liability legally?" Taxes suck. They suck even more when you think about where your money is being spent (usually on pet projects, wasted on nonsense or plain lost). But if...
I don't like the word "normal." Normal is average, and average isn't impressive. It's also not what builds successful careers and makes people rich. What does normal look like? 85% of people hate their jobs Total U.S. credit card balance is $1.079 trillion 33 million Americans are addicted to social media Most can't cover a $1,000 emergency without debt This is normal, and I want no part of it.
